In the 1930s, the butterfly valve was invented in the United States, introduced to Japan in the 1950s, and became widely used in Japan by the 1960s. It was not until the 1970s that it gained popularity in China. Currently, butterfly valves with diameters above DN300 mm are gradually replacing gate valves. Compared to gate valves, butterfly valves have shorter opening and closing times, require smaller operating torque, occupy less installation space, and are lighter in weight. Taking DN1000 as an example, a butterfly valve weighs about 2 tons, while a gate valve weighs about 3.5 tons. Additionally, butterfly valves can easily be combined with various driving devices, offering excellent durability and reliability. 

The drawback of rubber-sealed butterfly valves is that, when used for throttling, improper operation can cause cavitation, leading to issues such as peeling or damage of the rubber seat. To address this, metal-sealed butterfly valves have been developed internationally, reducing the cavitation zone. In recent years, China has also developed metal-sealed butterfly valves, and Japan has further advanced with the development of comb-tooth butterfly valves that are resistant to cavitation, low vibration, and low noise.
