What Pressure is Required for a High-Pressure Cleaner to Remove Paint
In many maintenance facilities, especially places like shipyards, removing paint is one of the most critical tasks. In the past, we often relied on manual labor to remove old paint from surfaces like ship hulls. However, this method is highly inefficient. With technological advancements, high-pressure cleaners are now widely used for paint removal. The biggest advantage of using a high-pressure cleaner for paint removal is its extremely high efficiency, and the results are more thorough compared to manual methods. So, what pressure is typically required for a high-pressure cleaner to remove paint?
Currently, the two most common methods for paint removal using high-pressure cleaners are pure water blasting and sandblasting. Pure water blasting relies solely on the ultra-high pressure of the cleaner to strip paint from surfaces. However, this method demands very high pressure and flow rates from the cleaner, especially pressure. Generally, a pressure of at least 500 kg is barely sufficient to remove paint, while 1000 kg or more makes the task easier. For large-scale paint removal, the pressure requirement should ideally be between 2000-3000 kg, and the flow rate should be as high as possible. Machines with such ultra-high pressure are usually very expensive. Therefore, many facilities now opt for another method: sandblasting. Sandblasting requires much lower pressure from the high-pressure cleaner, typically around 200-500 kg, and sand is very inexpensive. This makes sandblasting highly popular in places like shipyards.
However, the biggest issue with sandblasting is sand pollution. During the paint removal process, a large amount of waste sand is continuously generated. While this may not be a problem for outdoor operations like shipyards, where environmental requirements are less strict, it is unsuitable for places like automotive paint shops. In such cases, pure water blasting is the only viable method for surface treatment.
