Rhamnolipid
Rhamnolipid is a biosurfactant produced by Pseudomonas or Burkholderia species through biological metabolism. It is also one of the most extensively researched and technologically mature biosurfactants. It naturally occurs in soil, water, and plants, exhibiting excellent chemical and biological properties. With both oil and water affinity, it can reduce water surface tension and functions as a wetting agent, emulsifier, and foaming agent. Rhamnolipid biosurfactant can be used under extreme conditions of temperature, pH, and salinity, is non-toxic, and biodegradable.

1. Petroleum Industry: As a biosurfactant, it reduces oil-water interfacial tension and is used in tertiary oil recovery techniques following primary and secondary recovery, enhancing oil field recovery rates.
Used as a sacrificial agent to reduce the dosage or loss of expensive oil displacement agents in formations. When combined with other oil displacement agents, it offers effective oil displacement with long-lasting results. The addition of rhamnolipid significantly reduces the amount of oil displacement agent required, greatly lowering costs.
2. Agriculture: Promotes nutrient absorption in crops, improves soil environment, induces early maturation, increases yield and income, and prevents certain pests and diseases. Rhamnolipid serves as an effective method for plants to absorb heavy metal ions from soil, making it a viable approach for in-situ treatment of heavy metal-contaminated soil using phytotechnology.
As a wetting agent added to foliar fertilizers, it improves wetting on waxy layers, allowing fertilizers to spread fully and promoting maximum absorption and utilization of nutrients.
3. Food Industry: Can be used to improve the stability of dough or batter, dough texture, better control of leavening volume and shape in baked goods, and enhance the storage of baked products. Rhamnolipid can further improve the stability of whipped cream and decorative cream, as well as the stability of non-dairy cream fillings in Danish pastries, croissants, and other fresh or frozen refined sugar-containing foods.
Used primarily as a coating agent for fruit and vegetable preservation. When applied to the surface, it forms a thin film that prevents oxygen from entering, creating a low-oxygen micro-environment that reduces respiration and extends the storage life of fruits and vegetables.
4. Pharmaceutical Manufacturing: Can be used to treat wounds and burns, accelerating the healing process and reducing scarring when combined with other treatments. Effective in treating skin conditions like psoriasis and dermatitis, and in combating fungal and bacterial infections.
Also used as coatings for stents, implants, prosthetics, and bandages, and in preventing gum diseases.
5. Daily Chemical Industry: Facilitates substance diffusion through dispersing and wetting properties. Helps retain moisture, lubricate, and generate foam; maintains system stability in mixtures, controls product viscosity, and emulsifies pore oils to reduce acne occurrence.
