Tempered glass

Tempered glass is actually a type of prestressed glass. To enhance the strength of the glass, chemical or physical methods are typically used to create compressive stress on the glass surface. When the glass is subjected to external forces, it first counteracts the surface stress, thereby increasing its load-bearing capacity and improving its tensile strength. The main advantages of tempered glass are twofold. First, its strength is several times higher than that of ordinary glass, with a bending strength 3–5 times greater and an impact resistance 5–10 times higher. This increase in strength also enhances safety. The second major advantage is its safety in use. The improved load-bearing capacity reduces its brittleness; even when tempered glass breaks, it shatters into small fragments without sharp edges, significantly reducing the risk of injury. Additionally, tempered glass's resistance to rapid temperature changes is 2–3 times higher than that of ordinary glass, generally withstanding temperature differences of over 150°C, making it highly effective in preventing thermal breakage.
