【Efficacy】
1. Remove heavy metals: KDF treatment media can remove heavy metal ions from water, such as lead, mercury, copper, nickel, cadmium, arsenic, antimony, aluminum, and many other soluble heavy metal ions. Their removal is achieved through electrochemical redox reactions and catalytic action.
The mechanism of KDF removing heavy metal ions is as follows: metal ions are plated onto the surface of the KDF treatment media or enter the KDF.
2. Remove oxidants (residual chlorine): KDF can remove oxidants from water, such as residual chlorine. This is accomplished through electrochemical redox reactions. Redox reactions occur because KDF is composed of two different metals; when in contact with water, the copper with a positive potential in the alloy becomes the cathode, while the zinc with a negative potential is the anode. Reduction occurs at the cathode, and oxidation occurs at the anode. The zinc anode loses electrons in the reaction, and zinc ions become sacrificial and enter the solution. Reduction of free chlorine occurs at the copper cathode without dissolution of metallic copper. Water and residual chlorine become electron acceptors, simultaneously generating hydrogen ions, hydroxide ions, and chloride ions. The overall reaction is as follows:
Zn + HOCl + H2O + 2e- → Zn2+ + Cl- + H+ + 2OH-
Other oxidants in water, such as ozone, bromine, iodine, etc., can also undergo redox reactions upon contact with KDF55.
3. Reduce mineral scaling: Due to the dissolution of zinc ions from the KDF treatment media, the zinc ion content in water increases. The presence of zinc ions in water can alter the crystal growth mechanism of scale, causing calcium carbonate scale in water to precipitate in the form of aragonite, forming soft scale on container walls rather than crystallizing into hard calcite scale. Studies have been conducted on the effect of impurities in water on calcite crystal growth, and it was found that even at very low concentrations, zinc ions can prevent the formation of calcite crystals.
4. Inhibit microbial growth: The Environmental Protection Agency recognizes KDF55 treatment media as a microbial inhibitor, indicating that this media can inhibit microbial reproduction. KDF55 treatment media controls microbial growth not through a single mechanism but through several, including individual or synergistic actions. The main mechanisms include changes in redox potential, formation of hydroxide ions and hydrogen peroxide, and dissolution of zinc from the media. In general, when used as a pretreatment for reverse osmosis membranes, KDF55 treatment media can inhibit the growth of bacteria, algae, and other microorganisms, thereby preventing damage to the membranes by microbes.
