Additional Information

Glycidyl Methacrylate (abbreviated as GMA) is a monomer that possesses both an acrylate double bond and an epoxy group. The acrylate double bond has high reactivity and can undergo self-polymerization or copolymerize with many other monomers. The epoxy group can react with hydroxyl, amino, carboxyl groups, or anhydrides, introducing additional functional groups and thereby imparting more functionality to the product. As a result, GMA has extremely broad applications in organic synthesis, polymer synthesis, polymer modification, composite materials, UV-curable materials, coatings, adhesives, leather, chemical fiber papermaking, printing and dyeing, and many other fields. Physicochemical properties: At room temperature, it is a colorless, transparent, low-viscosity liquid, soluble in common organic solvents but insoluble in water. Due to the use of epichlorohydrin in the production process, there is usually a small amount of epichlorohydrin residue in the product. GMA has a typical acrylate odor and exhibits certain skin and eye irritation. Both the liquid and vapor are flammable. Polymerization may occur at higher temperatures, so an inhibitor must be added. Because GMA contains both a reactive vinyl group and an ionically reactive epoxy group, it can polymerize via functional group reactions or ionic reactions. Therefore, it can be used to modify vinyl polymers and condensation polymers. GMA can participate in polymerization in three ways: first, during vinyl polymerization, the epoxy group is located on the side chain, forming an "O"-type polymer; second, the epoxy ring opens, placing the vinyl group on the side chain, forming a "V"-type polymer (as referenced on Chemicalbook); third, compounds with active hydrogen react with GMA, opening the epoxy ring to form a chain. Using any of these three methods, polymers can be modified during polymerization. In coatings, the addition of GMA can improve the hardness, gloss, adhesion, and weather resistance of the coating film. It can be used in acrylic coatings, acrylate coatings, alkyd resin coatings, vinyl chloride resins, and certain water-based coatings. Application areas: GMA has extremely broad applications in organic synthesis, polymer synthesis, polymer modification, composite materials, UV-curable materials, coatings, adhesives, leather, chemical fiber papermaking, printing and dyeing, and many other fields. GMA for powder coatings: One of the main uses of GMA is in the production of matting resins for outdoor powder coatings. Due to its epoxy group, it offers excellent leveling properties, weather resistance, salt spray resistance, high-temperature resistance, and anti-yellowing effects in powder coatings. GMA in plastic modification: Because GMA has a highly reactive acrylate double bond, it can be grafted onto polymers. Commercially, GMA is primarily used to graft POE as a compatibilizer for polyesters. These functionalized polymers can serve as toughening agents to enhance the toughness of engineering plastics or as compatibilizers to improve the compatibility of blended systems. GMA in UV adhesives: The double bond is used for UV free radical monomers and free radical cationic curing. Due to the presence of the epoxy group, the curing speed is slow, but the bonding effect is good. GMA in PCB inks: GMA can be used to produce PCB inks, such as green solder mask in acrylic systems. Green solder mask refers to the ink used on circuit boards.
