Glycidyl Methacrylate (GMA)
"Mass of the Double Bond"
You are the saint of methacrylic acid,
At the altar of glycidyl ester,
Igniting the holy oil of ultraviolet light with double bonds.
When the bell of free radicals rings,
You, at a concentration of 1.8%,
Conduct in the plastic vessels—
A transparent mass.
The infrared spectrometer witnesses
Your tremor upon ring-opening:
Each epoxy group
Is an unfinished embrace.
"Monologue of the Epoxy"
I am the covenant of double bond and epoxy,
Carving a polymerizable cross
Upon the collarbone of methacrylic.
When the bell of free radicals rings,
I, in the form of glycidyl ester,
Unfold in the baptism of UV—
Both monomer and bridge.
In the plastic vessels,
I am transparent solder;
On the skeleton of coatings,
I, at a concentration of 1.8%,
Suture hydrophobic cracks.
The infrared spectrometer sees
My tremor upon ring-opening:
Each epoxy group
Is an unfinished embrace.
Weicheng New Materials (Shandong) Co., Ltd., located in the Chemical Industry Park of Xuecheng District, Zaozhuang City, Shandong Province, is the largest producer of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) in China and a well-known manufacturer of the photoinitiator TPO-L.
CAS No.: 106-91-2
Molecular Weight: 142.1525
Molecular Formula: C7H10O3
Glycidyl methacrylate is a colorless transparent liquid, insoluble in water, and soluble in almost all organic solvents. It is irritating to the skin and mucous membranes. Avoid contact with acids, oxidizers, ultraviolet radiation, and free radical initiators. Due to the presence of both a carbon-carbon double bond and an epoxy group in its molecule, it can undergo both free radical and ionic reactions. Therefore, it is highly reactive and serves as an important fine chemical raw material.

Product Application: GMA contains two functional groups: a reactive vinyl group and an epoxy group capable of ionic reactions. It can polymerize via functional group reactions or ionic reactions, making it suitable for modifying both vinyl polymers and condensation polymers. GMA can participate in polymerization in three ways: first, during ethylene polymerization, placing the epoxy group on a side chain (i.e., "O"-type polymer [2]); second, ring-opening of the epoxy group to place the vinyl group on a side chain (i.e., "V"-type polymer [3]); third, reaction with compounds containing active hydrogen to open the epoxy ring and form a chain. Using any of these three methods, polymers can be modified during polymerization. In coatings, the addition of GMA improves hardness, gloss, adhesion, and weather resistance, making it applicable in acrylic coatings, acrylate coatings, alkyd resin coatings, vinyl chloride resins, and certain water-based coatings. For acrylic emulsions, adhesives, and non-woven fabrics, GMA enhances adhesion to metals, glass, cement, and polyvinyl fluoride. In synthetic latex non-woven fabrics, it improves washability without affecting texture. In synthetic resin processing, it enhances injection and extrusion moldability and significantly improves adhesion to metals. For synthetic fibers, it improves dyeability of poorly dyeable fibers, increases color fastness, and enhances wrinkle and shrink resistance. This product also increases the photosensitivity, resolution, and corrosion resistance of photosensitive resins.
Main Uses:
(1) Primarily used in powder coatings, as well as in thermosetting coatings, fiber treatment agents, adhesives, antistatic agents, vinyl chloride stabilizers, rubber and resin modifiers, and binders for ion-exchange resins and printing inks.
(2) Used as a functional monomer in polymerization reactions. Mainly employed in the production of acrylic powder coatings, where it acts as a soft monomer copolymerized with hard monomers like *** and styrene to adjust glass transition temperature and flexibility, improving gloss, adhesion, and weather resistance of coatings. Also used in the manufacture of acrylic emulsions and non-woven fabrics. As a functional monomer, it is used in the production of photosensitive resins, ion-exchange resins, chelating resins, medical selective filtration membranes, dental materials, anticoagulants, and immunoadsorbents. It is also used to modify polyolefin resins, rubber, and synthetic fibers.
(3) Due to the presence of both a carbon-carbon double bond and an epoxy group in its molecule, it is widely used in the synthesis and modification of polymer materials. It serves as a reactive diluent for epoxy resins, a stabilizer for vinyl chloride, a modifier for rubber and resins, and a binder for ion-exchange resins and printing inks. It is also used in powder coatings, thermosetting coatings, fiber treatment agents, adhesives, and antistatic agents. Additionally, GMA significantly improves the adhesion, water resistance, and solvent resistance of adhesives and non-woven fabric coatings.
(4) In electronics, it is used in photoresist films, electron beam protective films, far-infrared and X-ray protective films. In functional polymers, it is used in ion-exchange resins and chelating resins. In medical materials, it is used in anticoagulant materials and dental materials.
