Benzyl alcohol is one of the simplest aromatic alcohols, which can be regarded as methanol substituted by a phenyl group. In nature, it mostly exists in the form of esters in essential oils, such as jasmine oil, hyacinth oil, and Peru balsam. Benzyl alcohol is an extremely useful fixative and is an indispensable fragrance in the formulation of scents like jasmine, tuberose, and ylang-ylang. It is used in the preparation of soaps and daily cosmetic fragrances. However, benzyl alcohol can slowly undergo natural oxidation, partially forming benzaldehyde and benzyl ether, which imparts an almond-like aroma to commercially available products; thus, it is not suitable for long-term storage. In cosmetic formulations, benzyl alcohol is a restricted preservative with a maximum usage level of 1%. According to national standards, it is temporarily permitted as a food flavoring. It also serves as a fixative and a solvent for oils. As a fragrance, it is mainly used in formulating berry and nut-type flavors.
