Characteristics: White amorphous powder (or granules), easily soluble in water, aqueous solution is weakly alkaline with a pH of 8, slightly soluble in ethanol.

Uses: (1) Sodium benzoate has bactericidal and bacteriostatic effects. Its effectiveness is greatly influenced by changes in pH, with optimal effects at pH 2.5—4.5, significantly reduced in alkaline media. Widely used as a preservative in food, medicine, cosmetics, toothpaste, fragrances, tobacco, and feed.

(2) Sodium benzoate (1.5%) is effective in rust and corrosion prevention in automotive cooling systems. It can also be used in packaging pulp, latex coatings, paints, cutting oils, and machinery to prevent metal corrosion.

(3) Sodium benzoate can also be used in the manufacture of various medicines to treat arthritis, abscesses, bronchitis, skin diseases, etc.

(4) Used as an additive in plastics.
