Benzyl alcohol is one of the simplest aromatic alcohols, naturally occurring mostly in the form of esters in essential oils, such as jasmine oil, hyacinth oil, and Peru balsam. It is an extremely useful fixative and an indispensable fragrance in the formulation of perfumes like jasmine, tuberose, and ylang-ylang. It is used in the preparation of soaps and daily cosmetic fragrances. However, benzyl alcohol slowly undergoes natural oxidation, partially forming benzaldehyde and benzyl ether, which imparts an almond-like aroma to commercial products, making it unsuitable for long-term storage. Benzyl alcohol is widely used in the production of industrial chemicals. It serves as a solvent in coatings; a photographic developer; in pharmaceuticals; as a solvent for synthetic resins; as a solvent for vitamin B injections; and as a preservative in ointments or medicinal solutions. It can be used as a desiccant for nylon threads, fibers, and plastic films; as a solvent for dyes, cellulose esters, and casein; and as an intermediate in the production of benzyl esters or ethers. Additionally, it is widely used in pen manufacturing (ballpoint pen ink) and as a paint solvent. In cosmetic formulations, benzyl alcohol is a restricted preservative with a maximum allowable concentration of 1%. According to GB 2760--1996, it is temporarily approved as an edible flavoring. It also functions as a fixative and an oil solvent.
