Formic acid, also known as methanoic acid, has the chemical formula HCOOH. It is found in the secretions of hymenopteran insects such as ants and bees. The name "formic acid" originates from its early production through the distillation of ants. Formic acid is a colorless substance with a pungent odor and is corrosive, causing blisters and redness upon contact with human skin. It has a melting point of 8.4°C and a boiling point of 100.8°C. Due to its unique structure, where one hydrogen atom is directly bonded to the carboxyl group, it can also be considered as hydroxyformaldehyde. As a result, formic acid exhibits both acidic and aldehyde properties. In the chemical industry, it is used in the production of rubber, pharmaceuticals, dyes, and leather, among others.
