Drive Mechanism and Tooth Profile Design of Ratchet Wrenches

The driving efficiency of a ratchet wrench is closely related to its tooth density. Common designs such as 12-tooth, 24-tooth, and 72-tooth configurations determine the minimum operating angle—the more teeth, the smaller the rotation angle per tooth (e.g., a 72-tooth wrench requires only 5° to complete one engagement). This makes it particularly suitable for tight spaces constrained by pipes or brackets.

Drive mechanisms are divided into two types: external ratchet and internal ratchet. External ratchet wrenches have exposed ratchets, making them easy to clean and maintain, and are often used for large bolts. Internal ratchet mechanisms encapsulate the core components within the socket, offering better dust and water resistance, and are widely used in oily environments such as automobile engine compartments. Tooth surface hardening is a critical process, achieved through high-frequency quenching to ensure tooth tip hardness reaches above HRC55, balancing wear resistance and impact resistance.
