Protection Radius Calculation
According to the French NFC 17-120 standard, the lightning rod tip should be at least 2 meters above the horizontal plane of the protected object.
When h < 5m, the protection zone of the lightning rod must be obtained by depicting an electromagnetic model, as shown in the protection radius table;
When h ≥ 5m, the protection radius can be calculated using the following formula:
Rp = h ( 2 D – h ) + ΔL ( 2 D + ΔL )
Rp — Protection radius (m);
h — Distance between the lightning rod tip and the highest point of the protected object (m);
D — Rolling sphere radius (m); According to the French NFC17-102 standard: Class I buildings D=20m
(GB50057-94 specifies D=30m), Class II buildings D=45m, Class III buildings D=60m;
ΔL— Upward interception distance of the lightning rod (m), ΔL=V (m/μs) × ΔT(μs), where V
is the average leader propagation speed, approximately 1 meter per microsecond, and ΔT is the early streamer emission time of the lightning rod.
