III. Domestic Production Methods of Styrene
Currently, the main synthetic routes for styrene in China include the ethylene (dry gas)/benzene process route and the ethanol/benzene process route. In both processes, the technology for producing styrene from ethylbenzene is the same, with the main difference lying in the production process of ethylbenzene.
1. Ethylene/Benzene Process Route
The price of raw materials in this route is the main factor affecting the production cost of the product. Changes in the prices of petroleum, benzene, and ethylene have a decisive impact on the price of styrene.
2. Ethanol/Benzene Process Route
Factors influencing ethanol prices: (1) National policies on emission reduction and the elimination of outdated production capacity have a certain impact on ethanol prices; (2) The main raw materials for ethanol are food crops, and rising grain prices drive up ethanol prices; (3) Due to the interaction between fuel ethanol and gasoline prices, ethanol prices also fluctuate with changes in petroleum prices; (4) Extreme adverse weather conditions (such as droughts in the southwest) can affect the yield of ethanol raw materials (corn, sugarcane, cassava, etc.), and the prices of these ethanol raw materials show an upward trend.

5. Main Applications
1. The most important use is as a monomer for synthetic rubber and plastics, used to produce styrene-butadiene rubber, polystyrene, and foamed polystyrene;
2. Used in copolymerization with other monomers to produce various engineering plastics for different applications. For example, copolymerization with acrylonitrile and butadiene produces ABS resin, widely used in automotive manufacturing, household appliances, toy manufacturing, and other industrial sectors;
3. Copolymerization with acrylonitrile produces SAN, a resin with impact resistance and bright color; copolymerization with butadiene produces SBS, a thermoplastic rubber widely used as a modifier for PVC and polypropylene, and extensively used in tire manufacturing.

4. A small amount of styrene is also used as an intermediate in fragrances, etc.
5. Chloromethylation of styrene yields cinnamyl chloride, used as an intermediate for the non-narcotic analgesic Fortanodyn. Styrene is also used as the raw material for the antitussive and expectorant drug Eprazinone and the anticholinergic drug Glycopyrronium.
6. Styrene is used as a low-shrinkage agent in the manufacture of fiberglass reinforced plastics.
