Acrylic acid

Acrylic acid is divided into general-grade and refined-grade. The difference lies in the higher furfural content in refined-grade, which is primarily used for producing high-grade superabsorbent polymers; general-grade is mainly used for water reducers and acrylates. Acrylic acid is classified as a Class 8 corrosive substance, so it must be packaged in plastic drums and not in iron drums. Major manufacturers of acrylic acid include: Jiangsu Yulong, Shanghai Huayi, Qilu Petrochemical, Zhejiang Satellite, etc.

The production methods of acrylic acid mainly include acrylonitrile hydrolysis and propylene oxidation, so its price is closely related to both.
Uses of Acrylic Acid:
An important use is in the production of high-grade superabsorbent polymers and acrylates. It can also be used as a water reducer in concrete.
(1) An important organic synthesis raw material and synthetic resin monomer, mainly used to produce acrylates such as ethyl ester, butyl ester, hydroxypropyl ester, and hydroxyethyl ester.
(2) Acrylic acid and acrylates can undergo homopolymerization or copolymerization with monomers (such as amides, acrylonitrile, vinyl compounds, styrene, butadiene, and maleic anhydride). Their polymers are used in the production of plastics, coatings, adhesives, floor polishes, paints, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and water treatment (water thickeners).
(3) Copolymers of acrylic acid and ethyl acrylate can serve as thickeners for crude oil extraction in oil fields, increasing production output.
(4) Glacial acrylic acid is mainly used to produce high-grade superabsorbent polymers, primarily for various sports field surface materials and also in hygiene products (diapers).
Storage of Acrylic Acid:
If the storage warehouse temperature exceeds 35°C, acrylic acid is prone to polymerization. Therefore, polymerization inhibitors are generally added to acrylic acid. It should be stored in a cool, ventilated warehouse. In summer, if external temperatures are too high, it is advisable to store it in an ice warehouse if conditions permit.
