Many imaging experiments require the ability to move to multiple positions within a dish or tissue culture plate. Large motorized stages can achieve this, but often turn the microscope into a dedicated motorized imaging station. The size of motorized stages typically limits the possibility of placing other equipment, such as manipulators, on the same microscope.
Now, with a simple accessory, a standard Sutter MP-285 manipulator can be converted into a 3D motorized stage. The 3DMS manipulator and stage accessory can be mounted on an MT-75 gantry stand next to an upright microscope or on an MD series stand attached to the body of an inverted microscope. The compact size allows for simultaneous use of the manipulator and other devices.
When automatically acquiring images, refocusing at different XY positions is often necessary. This usually requires adding a motorized focus drive to the microscope. Since the 3DMS is a three-axis manipulator, focusing (vertical movement of the stage) is built-in. Surprisingly, this relatively small package still allows 25 mm of travel in the X, Y, and Z axes with sub-micron precision.
