Preparation of m-Chlorotoluene: Obtained by diazotization and substitution of m-toluidine. Add m-toluidine to water, slowly add concentrated hydrochloric acid, and drop a sodium nitrite solution at 0-5°C. Then add the diazonium solution to cuprous chloride for a substitution reaction. The resulting crude product is distilled to obtain the final product. If the diazonium salt is prepared as the zinc chloride double salt of m-toluidine diazonium salt and refluxed in ether, the reaction mixture is cooled, washed with water, and dried. After recovering the ether, perform atmospheric distillation and collect the fraction at 160-162°C to obtain m-chlorotoluene. The advantage of this method is that the diazonium salt is less prone to hydrolysis to form phenols.
