The Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) is an innovative wastewater treatment technology that combines modern membrane separation technology with biotechnology. It utilizes membrane separation equipment to effectively retain activated sludge and high molecular weight organic substances in the biochemical reaction tank, replacing the secondary sedimentation tank. This significantly increases the concentration of activated sludge (biomass) in the biochemical reaction tank, allowing for separate control of hydraulic retention time (HRT) and sludge retention time (SRT). It continuously reacts and degrades hard-to-degrade high molecular weight organic substances retained in the reactor. Therefore, the membrane bioreactor greatly enhances the treatment efficiency of the biological reactor through membrane separation technology. Compared to traditional biological treatment processes, it offers advantages such as high biochemical efficiency, strong resistance to impact loads, excellent and stable effluent quality, small footprint, long sludge discharge cycles, and ease of automation. It is currently one of the most promising biological wastewater treatment technologies in areas such as high-concentration organic wastewater treatment, domestic sewage treatment, and reclaimed water reuse.
