The originally new, clean, and transparent polycarbonate sheets develop cloudiness during use, with a rapid decline in light transmittance, and the surface color turns yellow, indicating aging. Internally, this reflects a rapid decrease in physical properties, losing the inherent high impact strength and tensile strength of the sheet, making it prone to breakage and cracking during use. In the building materials market, many inferior polycarbonate sheets are often seen. After a period of application, their transparency decreases significantly and rapidly, with visible cracks on the surface and even brittleness, all of which are clear signs of aging.
Extending the aging time of polycarbonate sheets is equivalent to prolonging their service life. The lifespan of polycarbonate sheets is directly related to the raw materials. If the molecular weight of the raw materials is insufficient during machine production, it will also affect the sheet's lifespan. The main raw material of polycarbonate sheets is polycarbonate, which is a polymer material. This material is directly linked to the service life of the sheet and is used to protect against UV radiation. UV radiation in the natural environment can cause chemical degradation of this polymer material, commonly referred to as aging. Therefore, solving the problem of UV protection is essential to extend the lifespan of polycarbonate sheets. It is recommended to choose polycarbonate sheets made from new materials when purchasing.
Sunlight Panel Product Characteristics:
(1) Light Transmittance: PC sunlight panels can achieve up to 89% light transmittance, comparable to glass. UV-coated panels do not easily yellow, fog, or lose transmittance when exposed to sunlight. After ten years, the light transmittance loss is about 10%, while PVC loss rates reach 15–20%, and fiberglass is about 12–20%.
(2) Impact Resistance: The impact strength is about 250–300 times that of ordinary glass, 30 times that of acrylic sheets of the same thickness, and 2–20 times that of tempered glass. It is known as "unbreakable glass" and "sounding steel."
(3) UV Protection: One side of the PC panel is co-extruded with an anti-UV coating, and the other side has anti-condensation treatment, combining UV resistance, thermal insulation, and anti-fogging functions. It blocks UV rays, making it suitable for protecting valuable artworks and exhibits from UV damage.
(4) Lightweight: The specific gravity is about half that of glass, reducing costs for transportation, handling, installation, and support structures.
(5) Flame Retardancy: According to standard GB50222—95, PC sunlight panels are classified as flame-retardant (B1 grade). The self-ignition point of PC panels is about 580°C, and they self-extinguish after being removed from fire. They do not produce toxic gases when burning and do not contribute to the spread of fire.
(6) Bendability: Can be cold-bent on-site according to design drawings to form arches, semi-circular roofs, and windows. The bending radius is about 175 times the panel thickness, and it can also be heat-bent.
(7) Sound Insulation: PC sunlight panels have significant sound insulation effects, offering better acoustic insulation than glass and acrylic sheets of the same thickness. Under the same thickness conditions, the sound insulation of PC sunlight panels is 5–9 dB higher than that of glass. They are the preferred material for highway sound barriers.
(8) Energy Efficiency: Cool in summer and warm in winter, PC sunlight panels have a lower thermal conductivity (K-value) than ordinary glass and other plastics. Their thermal insulation effect is 7–25% higher than that of glass, with thermal insulation efficiency up to 49%. This significantly reduces heat loss, making them suitable for buildings with heating systems.
(9) Temperature Adaptability: PC panels do not become brittle at -40°C and do not deform at 125°C. Their mechanical and physical properties remain largely unchanged in harsh environments.
(10) Weather Resistance: PC sunlight panels can maintain stable physical properties within a temperature range of -40°C to 120°C. After 4,000 hours of artificial weathering tests, the yellowing degree is 2, and the light transmittance reduction is about 0.6%.
(11) Anti-Condensation: At an outdoor temperature of 0°C and an indoor temperature of 23°C, with indoor relative humidity below 80%, the inner surface of the material does not condense. Condensation flows along the surface of the panel and does not drip.
