How to bend polycarbonate sheets specifically?
First, bend along the direction of the ribs of the polycarbonate sheet, and ensure it is less than the bending radius of the sheet (minimum bending radius), which is generally about 175 times the thickness of the sheet. It can be bent into arches, arcs, semicircles, etc. It is recommended to control the radius to more than 200 times the thickness of the sheet to better prevent damage.
Precautions for cold bending of polycarbonate sheets: 1. The direction of cold bending must follow the direction of the ribs of the polycarbonate sheet; otherwise, the sheet will break directly. 2. Cold bending must be within the normal range that the sheet can withstand, i.e., the bending radius of the sheet, and must not be less than the bending radius. 3. For polycarbonate sheets that have undergone cold bending, do not drill holes or lock screws in the bent part of the sheet.
Polycarbonate Sheet Product Features:
(1) Light Transmittance: PC polycarbonate sheets can achieve up to about 89% light transmittance, comparable to glass. UV-coated sheets are less prone to yellowing, fogging, or poor light transmission when exposed to sunlight. After ten years, the light transmittance loss is about 10%, while PVC loss rates reach 15–20%, and fiberglass about 12–20%.
(2) Impact Resistance: The impact strength is about 250–300 times that of ordinary glass, 30 times that of acrylic sheets of the same thickness, and 2–20 times that of tempered glass. It is known as "unbreakable glass" and "resonant steel."
(3) UV Protection: One side of the PC sheet is co-extruded with an anti-UV coating, and the other side has anti-condensation treatment, combining UV resistance, thermal insulation, and anti-fogging functions. It blocks ultraviolet rays and is suitable for protecting valuable artworks and exhibits from UV damage.
(4) Lightweight: The density is about half that of glass, reducing costs for transportation, handling, installation, and support structures.
(5) Flame Retardancy: According to standard GB50222—95, PC polycarbonate sheets are classified as flame-retardant (B1 grade). The self-ignition point of PC sheets is about 580°C, and they self-extinguish after removal from fire. They do not produce toxic gases when burning and do not contribute to the spread of flames.
(6) Bendability: Can be cold-bent on-site according to design drawings into arches, semicircular roofs, and windows. The bending radius is about 175 times the thickness of the sheet, and it can also be heat-bent.
(7) Sound Insulation: PC polycarbonate sheets have significant sound insulation effects, offering better acoustic insulation than glass and acrylic sheets of the same thickness. Under the same thickness conditions, the sound insulation of PC sheets is about 5–9 DB higher than that of glass. They are the preferred material for sound barriers on highways.
(8) Energy Efficiency: Cool in summer and warm in winter, PC polycarbonate sheets have a lower thermal conductivity (K-value) than ordinary glass and other plastics. The thermal insulation effect is about 7–25% higher than that of glass, with PC sheets achieving up to about 49% thermal insulation. This significantly reduces heat loss, making them suitable for buildings with heating systems.
(9) Temperature Adaptability: PC sheets do not become brittle at -40°C and do not deform at 125°C. Their mechanical and physical properties remain largely unchanged in harsh environments.
(10) Weather Resistance: PC polycarbonate sheets can maintain stability in various physical indicators within a range of -40°C to 120°C. After 4000 hours of artificial weathering tests, the yellowing degree is 2, and the light transmittance reduction is about 0.6%.
(11) Anti-Condensation: When the outdoor temperature is 0°C and the indoor temperature is 23°C, with indoor relative humidity below about 80%, the inner surface of the material does not condense. Condensation will flow along the surface of the sheet without dripping.
