1.Spontaneous Polarization of Barium Titanate Crystals

Barium titanate is a typical ferroelectric material, so when discussing barium titanate, its spontaneous polarization must be mentioned. Generally, the polarization process (methods) of dielectrics can be categorized into three types: electronic displacement polarization, ionic displacement polarization, and inherent dipole orientation polarization. For barium titanate, based on rigorous calculations by physicists, the contribution to spontaneous polarization mainly comes from the ionic displacement polarization of Ti⁴⁺ and the electronic displacement polarization of one of the O²⁻ ions in the oxygen octahedron.

2.Ferroelectric Domains in Barium Titanate Crystals

Barium titanate crystals are composed of countless barium titanate unit cells. When cubic barium titanate crystals cool below the Curie point (T_C), spontaneous polarization begins to occur, accompanied by a phase transition from cubic to tetragonal. During spontaneous polarization, some adjacent unit cells polarize along a specific crystal axis of the original cubic unit cell, while other adjacent unit cells may polarize along another crystal axis. Thus, after the transformation to the tetragonal phase, the crystal exhibits small units of cells polarized along different directions, referred to as point domains. In other words, as the temperature decreases and the crystal transitions from the paraelectric phase to the ferroelectric phase, spontaneous polarization leads to changes in surface electrostatic interactions, resulting in the formation of domain structures. The type of domain and the orientation of domain walls are primarily determined by the crystal's structural symmetry but must also satisfy the following two conditions: (1) Continuity of lattice deformation: The formation of domains ensures that the lattices on the two surfaces created by cutting the crystal along the domain wall are continuous and matched. (2) Continuity of spontaneous polarization components: The components of spontaneous polarization perpendicular to the domain wall in two adjacent domains are equal. Therefore, in tetragonal barium titanate single crystals, the spontaneous polarization directions of adjacent domains can only intersect at 180° or 90°, meaning only 180° domains and 90° domains exist.

3.Dielectric Properties of Barium Titanate

The dielectric properties of barium titanate mainly refer to those of barium titanate ceramics. The dielectric performance of barium titanate ceramics is generally similar to that of barium titanate single crystals. However, because ceramics have a polycrystalline structure with grains and grain boundaries, factors such as grain size, disordered orientation, the presence of glass phases, and impurities at grain boundaries directly affect their dielectric characteristics, making them differ from those of single crystals.

4.Applications of Barium Titanate

Barium titanate ceramics are currently one of the most widely used and thoroughly studied ferroelectric materials. Barium titanate was the first oxide ferroelectric material without hydrogen, known for its excellent performance and good chemical and thermal stability. With its high dielectric constant, low dielectric loss, and other superior properties, barium titanate is widely used in electronic components such as multilayer ceramic capacitors, thermistors, and optoelectronic devices, making it one of the most extensively applied ceramic materials in the electronics industry.
