Maraging steel is an ultra-high strength steel based on carbon-free or ultra-low carbon Fe-Ni martensite, which undergoes aging treatment to precipitate harden with intermetallic compounds. The strength of this type of steel does not come from carbon but from the precipitation of intermetallic compounds.

After solution treatment, 18Ni steel forms an ultra-low carbon martensite with a hardness of 28~30 HRC. Following aging treatment, due to the precipitation of various types of intermetallic compounds, age hardening occurs, increasing the hardness to 50 HRC. The outstanding feature of 18Ni steel is that, under conditions of ultra-high strength and high hardness, it still maintains good toughness and high fracture toughness. Additionally, this type of steel does not undergo work hardening, has minimal deformation during aging heat treatment, exhibits good weldability, and can undergo surface nitriding treatment.

18Ni maraging steel possesses high strength and hardness (ultra-high tensile strength, surface hardness of 50~54 HRC), along with good toughness and plasticity. It is a key material for manufacturing aerospace and defense industry equipment and is widely used in industries such as aviation, aerospace, and precision molds. Currently, it is extensively used domestically and internationally for manufacturing high-precision load-bearing components such as engine casings and high-speed rotors for uranium isotope centrifuges.
