A plug valve uses a plug body with a through-hole as the closing element. The plug body rotates with the valve stem to achieve opening and closing actions. Due to the wiping action between the sealing surfaces of the plug valve and its ability to avoid contact with the flowing medium when fully open, it is often suitable for media with suspended particles. Another important feature of plug valves is their adaptability to multi-channel structures, allowing one valve to achieve two, three, or even four different flow paths. This simplifies pipeline system design, reduces the number of valves required, and minimizes the need for some connecting fittings in equipment. Plug valves come in various channel forms: common straight-through types are mainly used for cutting off fluid flow; three-way and four-way plug valves are suitable for fluid diversion.
Plug valves can be classified into four types based on structure: gland-type plug valves, self-sealing plug valves, plug valves, and lubricated plug valves. Based on channel form, they can be divided into straight-through plug valves, three-way plug valves, and four-way plug valves.
Soft Seal Plug Valve: Soft seal plug valves are commonly used in corrosive and zero-leakage applications. The valve body can be made of carbon steel, alloy steel, or stainless steel depending on the working medium. Depending on the operating temperature and working medium, self-lubricating materials such as F4, F46, PVDF, PP, PO, and PE can be used for the bushing, providing good lubrication, a low friction coefficient of the sealing pair throughout the working process, and flexible operation of the plug body.
Oil-Lubricated Hard Seal Plug Valve: Oil-lubricated hard seal plug valves can be divided into conventional oil-lubricated plug valves and pressure-balanced plug valves. Lubricating grease is injected from the top of the plug body between the valve body's conical bore and the plug body, forming an oil film to reduce the valve's opening and closing torque, improve sealing, and extend service life.
Conventional Oil-Lubricated Plug Valve: The plug cone is installed in an upright position. To reduce friction between the valve body and the plug sealing surface, the valve typically uses a sealing grease lubrication structure for the seat. High-pressure sealing oil injected from the high-pressure oil nozzle forms a high-pressure sealing ring around the plug, creating an oil film between the valve body and the plug cone sealing surface, which both seals and lubricates, making opening and closing easy. The sealing area of the plug cone is overlay welded with STL alloy material or surface-hardened to enhance wear and corrosion resistance. The plug cone surface is polished to a mirror finish and lapped with the valve body's sealing surface, resulting in low opening and closing torque.
Pressure-Balanced Plug Valve: The plug cone is installed in an inverted position. The upper part of the plug cone has a check valve. When the valve is closed, due to the difference in cross-sectional area between the upper and lower parts of the plug cone, the injected high-pressure sealing oil generates an upward lifting force on the plug body, enabling sealing between the plug and the valve's sealing surface. At the moment of valve opening, the pressure in the lower cavity of the valve body balances with the medium pressure in the pipeline, while the high-pressure sealing oil in the upper cavity applies a downward thrust on the plug body, creating a small gap between the plug cone and the valve body sealing surface, reducing the torque required to rotate the plug body. This also protects the sealing pair. In high-temperature conditions, the thermal expansion of the plug can be absorbed through its lifting action, preventing the sealing pair from jamming.
