DBE is a mixture of divalent acid esters, primarily composed of dimethyl succinate CH3OOC(CH2)2COOCH3, dimethyl glutarate CH3OOC(CH2)3COOCH3, and dimethyl adipate CH3OOC(CH2)4COOCH3. It is a non-toxic, colorless transparent liquid with a slight aromatic odor, serving as an environmentally friendly high-boiling-point solvent that is biodegradable. It is widely used in the coatings industry (universal solvent for coatings) and other fields.
Main Applications:
It is extensively used in coil coatings, baking paints, can printing coatings, automotive coatings, wood coatings, ink industry, resin industry, insulating varnishes, electrical and metal furniture paints, among others. Additionally, it can be used as a cleaning agent, paint remover, core binder for casting, flux in the electronics industry, and as an intermediate in organic synthesis.
1. Coil Coatings: DBE helps maintain a balanced evaporation rate, avoiding defects such as film blisters due to rapid evaporation and issues from over-baking. It imparts a smooth appearance to the coating film, improves toughness and post-processing performance, and enhances pigment hiding power.
2. Baking Paint Industry: DBE exhibits sacrificial volatility; as temperature rises, its evaporation rate increases faster than other solvents. This means it evaporates slowly in the initial stage and quickly in the later stage, which is more conducive to drying.
3. Container/Can Coatings: DBE can effectively replace isophorone, propylene glycol ethers, and ethyl cellosolve acetate solvents in can and container coatings. Its high solvency and low evaporation rate provide excellent leveling properties to the coatings, improving flexibility, adhesion, and other important characteristics.
4. Automotive Coatings: It can be used in various automotive coatings and different resin systems. It is applicable in primers and topcoats to achieve ideal gloss on the film surface, enhance fullness, and improve wetting, leveling, and reflow properties when added in small amounts to formulations.
5. Enamel Wire Coatings: DBE is an excellent solvent for formulations involving polyvinyl butyral, polyvinyl formal, polyurethane, polyester, and polyesteramide. In polyester and polyesteramide systems, it can completely replace cresol. Using DBE allows for high solid content and low viscosity resins, and its non-corrosive nature significantly reduces storage difficulties for users.
6. Wood Coatings: DBE has a long distillation range and a wide buffer interval, offering customers greater flexibility and selectivity in solvent formulations and application conditions. It helps regulate evaporation rates, improve leveling, and prevent surface defects like blushing and pinholing.
7. Ink Industry: DBE replaces highly toxic and strong-smelling high-boiling solvents like isophorone used in inks.
8. Resin Industry: DBE has low viscosity, which can reduce resin viscosity without lowering molecular weight or solid content. Alternatively, it allows for higher solid content while maintaining the same viscosity. This characteristic enables the production of high solid content, low viscosity resins.
9. Applications in Polymers and Chemical Intermediates: DBE can be used as an intermediate in organic synthesis. Polycondensation reactions can produce a wide variety of polyesters and other polymers, and it is also a raw material for producing chemicals such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and initiators.
