Pure Steam Quality Validation Standards

1. Non-Condensable Gases

During pure steam sterilization, low levels of non-condensable gases can significantly affect sterilization performance and the sterilization process, leading to overheating in the sterilization chamber, unstable operation of air detectors, and BD test failures. Non-condensable gases mainly consist of air and carbon dioxide.

The European Union has established relevant standards requiring that the non-condensable gas content in pure steam used for steam sterilizers must not exceed 3.5% by volume.

2. Superheat

Superheated steam is not suitable for moist heat sterilization and may cause sterilization failure; it is more likely to scorch textiles and paper; and it accelerates the aging of rubber products.

European standards require that the difference between the temperature of pure steam released at atmospheric pressure and the boiling point of water at atmospheric pressure must not exceed 25°C.

3. Dryness Value

For pure steam sterilization, the dryness of steam is a critical performance indicator. If the sterilized items are porous materials, excessive moisture can easily cause a wet load on the sterilized items; for non-porous materials, it can lead to uneven temperature distribution during sterilization, which is particularly evident in the sterilization process of large quantities of ampoules.

European standards require that the dryness value for pure steam sterilization must not be less than 0.9, and for metal loads, the dryness value of pure steam must not be less than 0.95. Research and practice have shown that if the dryness value of pure steam is between 0.9 and 1.0, sterilization failure is unlikely to occur.
