English Name: Mucin from bovine submaxillary glands
CAS Number: 84195-52-8
Grade: BR
Source: Bovine submaxillary glands
Description: A dry powder suitable as a substrate for neuraminidase. Bovine submaxillary mucin has a molecular weight of 4–40×10⁵ Da. The molecule consists of major and minor components with a protein moiety (36.6% of the molecule) and a carbohydrate moiety (56.7% of the molecule).
Properties: White or yellowish-brown powder. The sugar chains in mucin account for more than 50% of the total molecular weight, sometimes up to 80%. Monosaccharides are linked to the side chains of the core protein via O-glycosidic bonds and are covalently interconnected, forming giant molecules with molecular weights in the millions. The molecules contain a large amount of water, forming a gel that covers the mucosal surface.
Application: Biochemical research. Mucin is a major component produced by epithelial cells, providing protection and lubrication to cells. This product is for research use only.
Storage: 2–8°C
