1. What is ESD?

ESD stands for ElectroStatic Discharge, meaning "electrostatic discharge." ESD is a discipline formed since the mid-20th century that studies the generation and decay of static electricity, electrostatic discharge models, and electrostatic discharge effects such as current thermal (spark) effects (e.g., fires and explosions caused by static electricity) and electromagnetic effects (e.g., electromagnetic interference). In recent years, with the rapid development of science and technology, the widespread application of microelectronics, and increasingly complex electromagnetic environments, greater attention has been paid to the electromagnetic field effects of electrostatic discharge, such as electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).

2. What is ESD20.20?

The full name of the ESD20.20 standard is ANSI/ESDS20.20. This standard is an American standard but is widely adopted in North America, Europe, and Asia. The ESD20.20 standard is a manufacturer recognition standard vigorously promoted by ESDA (Electrostatic Discharge Association), an association composed of manufacturers and users of electronic components, including major companies such as IBM and MOTOROLA. OEM factories or suppliers of these companies must obtain and maintain ANSI/ESDS20.20 certification to qualify as OEM and product suppliers. Therefore, ESD20.20 can be considered a buyer certification standard. For manufacturers of chips, electronic components, power supplies and converters, and display screens, obtaining ESD20.20 certification is almost mandatory to become a supplier for well-known brands.

3. Why is ANSI/ESDS20.20 Certification Needed?

The ANSI/ESDS20.20 standard is developed by ESDA as an implementation specification and guideline for electrostatic discharge protection systems in the electronics, electrical, and communications industries. It can be seen as a specific requirement of potential customers for enterprises. Implementing ANSI/ESDS20.20 certification allows local enterprises aspiring to become suppliers for well-known multinational companies to meet customer requirements ahead of competitors, positioning themselves proactively. On-site system certification by a reputable and impartial third-party certification body can fairly and objectively demonstrate the suitability, adequacy, and effectiveness of an enterprise's electrostatic protection and control system establishment and implementation. It can also appropriately reduce the costs associated with second-party certification.

4. Introduction to the ANSI/ESDS20.20 Standard

ANSI/ESDS20.20 builds upon ISO9001, adding specific requirements for electrostatic discharge protection control systems. The standard provides clear regulations on various aspects, including the establishment of a factory's ESD system, the setup of EPA (Electrostatic Protected Area), packaging of sensitive devices, handling of production processes, personnel training and assessment, establishment and inspection of internal audit systems, and testing methods.
