Adrenodoxin is a non heme iron sulfide protein in the mitochondria of the adrenal cortex. With a molecular weight of approximately 22000, it plays a role in the non phosphorylated electron transfer system and is an electron carrier protein. In the mitochondria of the adrenal cortex, it is involved in the biosynthesis of steroid hormones. Adrenoxin (ADX) is a non heme iron sulfide protein in the mitochondria of the adrenal cortex. With a molecular weight of approximately 22000, it plays a role in the non phosphorylated electron transfer system and is an electron carrier protein. In the mitochondria of the adrenal cortex, it is involved in the biosynthesis of steroid hormones. The protein is brown in color and has the highest absorption at 415 nanometers and 453 nanometers. It can be reduced by NADPH and flavinase, oxidized by P-450, and is related to the hydroxylation reaction of steroids caused by oxygen molecules in the adrenal cortex. In the process of catalyzing the hydroxylation of C-22 and C-20 positions in the cholesterol structure by cytochrome P450scc, the carbon chains between them are then cleaved to form pregnenolone. In each catalytic step, two pairs of electrons are transported from NADPH to cytochrome P450scc through cortical ferriredoxin and its reductase.
