Main Uses

Standard Fuel and Octane Rating Benchmark

The octane rating of n-heptane is defined as 0 (isooctane is 100), making it a reference substance for measuring the anti-knock performance of gasoline. The octane rating of gasoline is determined by comparing it with mixtures of n-heptane and isooctane.

Organic Solvent

Used for extracting fats, waxes, resins, and other substances, and also as a solvent for organic synthesis reactions (such as extraction and crystallization processes).

In the laboratory, it is commonly used as a standard or solvent in chromatographic analysis (such as gas chromatography).

Chemical Raw Material

Through reactions such as dehydrogenation and isomerization, it can be used to prepare olefins and aromatics for the synthesis of polymer materials like synthetic rubber and plastics. It can also be used to produce fine chemical products such as surfactants and plasticizers.

Other Applications

As a cleaning agent, it is used for degreasing and cleaning precision instruments and metal surfaces (due to its strong solubility and high volatility).

In the fuel sector, it can serve as a gasoline blending component (however, due to its low octane rating, the proportion must be controlled).
