Main Uses
Acrylic acid is the "cornerstone" of polymer materials, and its derivatives and polymers are used in various fields:
Synthetic Polymer Monomers:
Self-polymerization to produce polyacrylic acid (PAA), which has strong water solubility and carboxyl activity, used as water treatment agents (scale inhibition, dispersion), thickeners, and detergent auxiliaries;
Copolymerization with acrylamide to produce polyacrylamide-acrylic acid copolymers, used in oilfield production (oil displacement agents) and sewage treatment (flocculants).
Preparation of Acrylates:
Esterification with methanol, ethanol, butanol, etc., to produce methyl acrylate (MA), ethyl acrylate (EA), butyl acrylate (BA), etc., which are core monomers for synthesizing acrylate resins; these resins have excellent weather resistance and adhesion, and are widely used in coatings (exterior wall paints, automotive paints), adhesives (pressure-sensitive adhesives), and plastic modification (PVC toughening).
Other Applications:
Used to synthesize superabsorbent resins (such as sodium polyacrylate), which can absorb hundreds of times their weight in water, used in diapers and agricultural water-retaining agents;
In the textile industry, graft copolymerization with fibers improves the water absorption and wrinkle resistance of fabrics;
In the pharmaceutical field, used as a raw material for synthesizing sustained-release drug carriers.
