Uses
Fuel field: Isooctane exhibits good knock resistance when burning in the cylinders of internal combustion engines, and its octane number is defined as 100. It is often blended with n-heptane (which has an octane number of zero) in various proportions to serve as a standard for determining the octane number of gasoline. In addition, it can be used as a fuel additive to increase the octane number of gasoline, aviation gasoline, etc., improve the anti-knock performance of fuels, and reduce exhaust emissions.
Solvent field: Due to its strong volatility and good miscibility with other organic solvents, isooctane is commonly used as a non-polar inert solvent in organic synthesis for dissolving and reacting with various organic substances. For example, it can serve as a reaction solvent during the polymerization of butadiene. Furthermore, isooctane can also be used as a standard substance in chromatographic analysis and as a diluent in organic synthesis.
Other fields: In some analytical tests, such as studying the diffusion characteristics of zeolite mixtures using gravimetric analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and the inversion method (IRIS), isooctane can be used as a research medium. In the research and development of fuel additives, isooctane is also commonly used as a base fuel to evaluate the performance of various additives.
