| Physicochemical Properties | Sodium methanethiolate is the sodium salt of methanethiol, with the chemical formula CH3SNa. Its aqueous solution is a pale yellow-red transparent liquid with a foul odor; it is a strongly alkaline liquid and can be used as a raw material for pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and dye intermediates. It can be oxidized by iodine to dimethyl disulfide (CH3SSCH3), which is used for its analysis. Sodium methanethiolate is an important organic intermediate compound, used in pesticides such as simetryn and methomyl, as well as an organic intermediate raw material; it is also a raw material for food additives like methionine and vitamin U, rubber vulcanizing agents; an antidote for hydrogen sulfide poisoning; and an odorant for coal gas and natural gas. Sodium methanethiolate is a hazardous material, classified as Class 8 (corrosive) for primary hazard and Class 4.1 (flammable solid) for secondary hazard. Export requires handling as a formal hazardous material; it can normally be shipped via sea freight, air freight, and international express. |
