| Physicochemical Properties | Pure thioglycolic acid is a colorless and transparent liquid, while industrial grade is colorless to slightly yellow, with a strong pungent odor. It is miscible with water, ethanol, and ether. Perm products utilize thioglycolic acid to break some of the disulfide bonds in hair to alter the degree of curl, achieving perming and styling effects. However, thioglycolic acid is toxic, easily absorbed through the skin and respiratory tract, causing symptoms such as skin damage and allergies, and even affecting body metabolism. Long-term exposure can cause damage to various tissues and organs, and it has strong mutagenicity and reproductive toxicity. Therefore, strict control is required. |
