The Intel 80486 processor generation transitioned computers from command-line to point-and-click graphical operating environments. Recalling the era, David K. Allison, a technology historian at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, said: "I owned my first color-screen computer back then, and was able to complete desktop publishing tasks at a significantly accelerated speed." The Intel 80486 processor was the first to integrate a math coprocessor, which could handle complex mathematical operations as a central processing unit, thus speeding up overall computing speed. The Intel 80486 contained 1.2 million transistors.
