Phenol formaldehyde resin (abbreviated as PF), also known as bakelite or bakelite powder, is a colorless or yellowish-brown transparent solid. Colorants are often added during market sales, so it appears in colors such as red, yellow, black, green, brown, and blue, and exists in granular or powdery forms. Phenol formaldehyde resin is the first type of plastic to be put into industrial production. It has high mechanical strength, good insulation, heat resistance, and corrosion resistance, so it is often used to manufacture electrical materials such as switches, lamp holders, earphones, telephone housings, instrument housings, etc., which is how it got the name "bakelite". Phenol formaldehyde resin is resistant to weak acids and weak bases, decomposes when exposed to strong acids, and is corroded when exposed to strong bases; it is insoluble in water and soluble in organic solvents such as acetone and alcohol. It is obtained by polycondensation of phenol aldehyde or its derivatives. Characteristics (characteristics of the cured product): High carbon content, can be used as an ablative material; good heat resistance; good corrosion resistance; good water resistance; good dimensional stability, molded products have a fixed shape and do not crack, etc.

Thermosetting phenol formaldehyde resin is also an important raw material for adhesives. Single-component phenol formaldehyde resin adhesive is brittle and is mainly used for bonding plywood and precision casting sand molds. Adhesives based on phenol formaldehyde resin modified with other polymers occupy an important position in structural adhesives. Among them, adhesives such as phenol-nitrile rubber, phenol-formaldehyde acetal, phenol-epoxy, phenol-epoxy-formaldehyde acetal, and phenol-nylon have the characteristics of good heat resistance and high bonding strength. Phenol-nitrile rubber and phenol-formaldehyde acetal adhesives also have excellent properties such as tensile strength, impact resistance, and resistance to heat and humidity aging, and are excellent varieties of structural adhesives.
