Application Fields

Based on the characteristics of "moderate reactivity + moderate hydrophobicity," HPA is more suitable for scenarios with higher requirements for water resistance and controllable crosslinking:

Coatings and Paints:

Solvent-based coatings: Copolymerized with butyl acrylate, the hydroxyl group participates in amino resin crosslinking to prepare automotive topcoats. The salt spray resistance (ASTM B117) reaches 1000 hours (superior to the 800 hours of the HEA system), and the gloss retention rate is > 90% (QUV aging 500 hours).

Wood coatings: Reacts with polyurethane prepolymers as a crosslinking monomer. Due to strong hydrophobicity, the coating is resistant to boiling water immersion (no whitening after 2 hours), making it suitable for bathroom furniture finishing.

Adhesives and Sealants:

Hot melt adhesives: Modifies EVA resin; the hydroxyl group enhances adhesion to polar substrates (such as PET film). The peel strength reaches 8 N/25mm (a 40% increase compared to unmodified), and the temperature resistance (softening point > 80°C) is superior to the HEA-modified system.

Photovoltaic (PV) encapsulant films: Copolymerized with ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), the introduced hydroxyl groups enhance hydrogen bonding with glass. The interlayer peel force is > 60 N/cm, meeting the 25-year service life requirement of PV modules.

Polymer Modification:

Water-based emulsions: Copolymerized with styrene and ethyl acrylate to prepare architectural emulsions. Hydroxyl crosslinking gives the film a scrub resistance of 5,000 times (GB/T 9266), and due to strong hydrophobicity, the low-temperature film-forming property (minimum film-forming temperature < 5°C) is superior to the HEA system.

Elastomers: Modifies chloroprene rubber; the hydroxyl group reacts with hydroxyl groups on metal surfaces, improving the shear strength of rubber-to-steel bonding (>8 MPa), used in automotive vibration damping components.

Other Fields:

Oilfield chemicals: Used as a monomer for drilling fluid fluid loss additives; copolymerized with acrylamide, the hydroxyl group enhances adsorption to clay, reducing fluid loss to below 5 mL (API standard).

3D printing resins: Used with photoinitiators; due to the moderate polymerization rate of the double bond (curing time 1-2 seconds), the printing precision (±0.1 mm) is superior to HEA, used for preparing water-resistant models (such as underwater sensor housings).
