At room temperature, it contains three hydrates. The light-colored form is white, brittle, or loose white powder. Odorless. Relative density is 2.2. Melting point is 350°C. It is stable in air. When heated to 700°C, it turns into magnesium oxide. It is almost insoluble in water but causes a slight alkaline reaction. It is insoluble in ethanol but soluble in oleic acid with effervescence.
