Plastic uniaxial geogrid is manufactured by punching holes in polymer sheets (typically made of polypropylene or high-density polyethylene) produced through extrusion, followed by oriented stretching under heating conditions. Uniaxial geogrids are stretched only along the length of the sheet, while biaxial geogrids are further stretched perpendicular to the length direction of the uniaxial geogrid.
During the manufacturing process, the polymer macromolecules in plastic geogrids undergo reorientation and alignment as they are heated and stretched, strengthening the bonds between molecular chains and thereby enhancing their strength. The elongation rate is only 10-15% of that of the original sheet. If anti-aging materials such as carbon black are added to the geogrid, it can exhibit improved resistance to acids, alkalis, corrosion, and aging.
Applications:
1. Uniaxial geogrids are used to reinforce weak foundations: They enhance the bearing capacity of the foundation, control settlement, distribute loads to a wider subbase through lateral confinement of the road base, reduce base thickness, lower engineering costs, shorten construction periods, and extend service life.
2. Uniaxial geogrids for cement pavements: When laid at the bottom of cement pavement layers, they reduce rut depth, extend the pavement's fatigue life, and decrease the thickness of the cement pavement, thereby saving costs.
3. Uniaxial geogrids for reinforcing embankment slopes and retaining walls: Traditional embankments, especially high ones, often require overfilling, and the edges are difficult to compact, leading to issues like water erosion, collapse, and instability. They also require gentler slopes, which occupy more land. Retaining walls face similar problems. Using geogrids to reinforce embankment slopes or retaining walls can reduce land use by half, extend service life, and lower costs.
4. Uniaxial geogrids for reinforcing river and sea embankments: They can be used to make gabions, which, combined with geogrids, prevent embankments from collapsing due to seawater erosion. Gabions are permeable, reducing wave impact, extending embankment life, saving labor and resources, and shortening construction periods.
5. Uniaxial geogrids for landfill treatment: When used in combination with other geosynthetic materials, they address issues such as uneven settlement and gas emissions in landfills, improving storage capacity.
