Below is an introduction to polyethylene:
Definition and Structure
Polyethylene (PE) is a high molecular compound polymerized from ethylene monomers. Its molecular chain mainly consists of carbon and hydrogen atoms, connected by repeating —CH₂—CH₂— units. Depending on the polymerization method and conditions, it can have linear or branched structures.
Classification
• Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE): Generally polymerized under high temperature and high pressure, it has many short branches with a density of 0.910-0.925 g/cm³. It offers good transparency, flexibility, low-temperature resistance, and breathability, commonly used in films, pipes, and other fields.
• High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE): Produced through low-pressure polymerization processes, its molecular chains are tightly arranged with few branches and a density of 0.941-0.965 g/cm³. It exhibits high rigidity, hardness, mechanical strength, and chemical corrosion resistance, widely used in pipes, injection-molded products, etc.
• Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE): This is a copolymer of ethylene and a small amount of α-olefin under the action of a catalyst. It combines some properties of both LDPE and HDPE, and its linear structure provides better tensile strength, tear resistance, etc., primarily used in film production.
