Properties: Colorless oily liquid. Boiling point 170-171°C, 56.5°C (1.07 kPa), relative density 1.200 (24/4°C), refractive index 1.4035, flash point 29°C. Soluble in water and most organic solvents.

Preparation Method: Produced by the reaction of methanol with phosphorus trichloride.

Uses: Used as a lubricant additive, adhesive, and intermediate in certain organic syntheses. Employed in the synthesis of pesticides such as omethoate, methylcyclophos, and the herbicide glyphosate. It is a key intermediate for pesticides including glyphosate, trichlorfon, dichlorvos, kitazin, and omethoate; also used in the production of organophosphorus corrosion inhibitors, plastic additives, dye additives, and flame retardants.
