Fluoboric acid

[Properties] Colorless transparent liquid. Strong acid. Cannot exist in pure form, only in aqueous solution. Industrial products are generally about 42-48% aqueous solution, with a relative density of 1.32 for 42% solution and 1.37 for 48% solution. Decomposes when heated to 130°C. Miscible with water or alcohol. Slowly decomposes in aqueous solution to form hydroxyfluoroboric acid (HBF₃OH). Stability gradually decreases when in contact with glass surfaces; a 0.047M fluoroboric acid solution stored in a glass bottle showed hydrolysis increasing from 20.6% to 72% after 32 days. Highly corrosive but does not erode glass at room temperature. Reacts with metal elements, metal fluorides, oxides, hydroxides, or carbonates to form corresponding fluoroborates. Toxic.
[Applications] Used for cleaning and etching oxide and silicate films on metal surfaces, and for cleaning aluminum and aluminum alloys before electroplating. A 2.5% solution is used for electrolytic polishing of pure aluminum, removing flux from metal substrates, and as a rinse for electroplated parts. Serves as a catalyst in alkylation and polymerization reactions, as a preservative, chemical reagent, and raw material for preparing various fluoroborates.
