Used mainly in

Pharmaceutical intermediates: used for synthesizing barbiturates

Organic pigments and dyes: used for the production of benzimidazolone organic pigments.

Aggregation catalyst: used as a catalyst in the synthesis of polymer materials.

Colorimetric analysis reagent: for colorimetric of furfural, pentoses, and sugar aldehyde derivatives.

Other uses: As an organic synthesis raw material, it is used for the synthesis of plastics, dyes, and heterocyclic compounds.

Synthesis lines:

1. Dissolve urea in methanol and heat to reflux for dissolution.

2. Add dry diethyl malonate and sodium methoxide (or sodium ethoxide), and reflux at 66-68 ℃for 4-

   5 hours.

3. After the reaction is complete, distill and recover methanol.

4. Cool to 40-50 ℃and adjust the pH to 1-2 with dilute hydrochloric acid.

5. Cool to room temperature, precipitate, filter, wash with water, decolorize with activated carbon, and recrystallize to obtain pure barbituric acid.

This reaction is a Knoevenagel condensation type reaction, which is the most commonly used method in industry
