Synthesis Route and Production Method
Dihydropyran method: Dihydropyran is hydrolyzed by heating in nitric acid, then cooled and stirred with sodium nitrate. The product is obtained through vacuum evaporation and cooling crystallization, with a yield of approximately 70–75%.
Hydrolysis of glutaronitrile is refluxed with hydrochloric acid for 4 hours. The residue after evaporation contains glutaric acid and ammonium chloride, which are extracted with ether and purified by recrystallization.
Cyclohexanone Oxidation Method: In industry, adipic acid is produced by nitric acid oxidation of cyclohexanone, with glutaric acid as a byproduct.
By-product recovery method: Recovered from the process of producing oxidized paraffin through paraffin oxidation, with separation and purification achieved via water extraction or distillation.
Cyclopentanone Liquid-Phase Oxidation Method: An Industrial Feasible Oxidation Route.
Dihydropyran method: Preparation by oxidation of dihydropyran, suitable for specific process conditions.
1,3-Propanediol method: In the laboratory, 1,3-propanediol can be used as the raw material for preparation.

Production of maleic anhydride: This is one of its most core applications.
Drugs intermediates: Used for synthesizing α-ketoglutaric acid, peroxypentanoic acid, and B-(4-chlorophenyl)glutaric acid, among others, and further employed in the production of antihypertensive drugs.
Polymer Industry: Serves as an initiator for synthetic resins and synthetic rubber, and is also used in the synthesis of plasticizers.
Organic Synthesis: Can be used to prepare ester compounds such as dimethyl glutarate and diethyl glutarate.
Cleaning Agent Material: Due to its mild chemical properties and excellent compatibility, it is suitable for specific industrial cleaning applications.
