Used mainly in

Herbicide: used to prevent and control broad-leaved weeds, suitable for grass crops such as rice, wheat, corn, sugarcane, lawn, etc. It is ineffective against grass weeds.

Plant growth regulators: At low concentrations (1-30 ppm), they can:

Stimulate crop growth

Protecting flowers and fruits

Promote fruit enlargement

Inducing seedless fruit formation

Synthesis lines:

The main industrial synthesis methods for 2,4-D are as follows:

1. Classic condensation method (most commonly used):

Starting from phenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol is first chlorinated to form 2,4-dichlorophenol;

o 2, 4-Dichlorophenol undergoes nucleophilic substitution reaction with chloroacetic acid under alkaline conditions (such as NaOH) to produce 2,4-D sodium salt;

Finally, 2,4-D raw material is obtained by acidification (such as using HCl).

Reaction formula:

C₆H₅OH →Cl₂ →2,4-Cl₂C₆H₃OH →ClCH₂COONa/NaOH →2,4-Cl₂C₆H₃OCH₂COONa →H⁺ →2,4-D

2. Alternative routes (mentioned in some literature):

Phenol first condenses with chloroacetic acid to form phenoxyacetic acid, and then undergoes chlorination;

Or adopt new green processes, such as using N-chlorosulfonylamide reagents to directly chlorinate aromatic rings
