Used mainly in
Pharmaceutical intermediates: used for the synthesis of drugs and intermediates such as levamisole and β - phenylethanol.
Fragrance industry: used as an aroma enhancer and spice intermediate to prepare rose oil, clove oil, orange flower oil and other essence.
Organic synthesis: used as a diluent for epoxy resin, UV absorber, and precursor for vinylbenzene glycol derivatives.
Metabolic research: It is the main toxic metabolite of styrene in organisms, catalyzed by epoxy hydrolase enzymes
Synthesis lines:
There are mainly two commonly used methods:
1. Halogen alcohol method (commonly used in industry)
Styrene reacts with sodium bromide and sulfuric acid to produce haloalcohols, which are then saponified and distilled by liquid caustic soda to obtain oxidized styrene.
2. Peroxyacetic acid oxidation method (commonly used in laboratory)
Styrene and peroxybenzoic acid react in chloroform at 0 ℃for 24 hours. The product is washed with sodium hydroxide, washed with water, dried, and distilled (collecting 188-192 ℃fractions) to obtain styrene oxide.
