Used mainly in

Production of trimellitic anhydride : used in the manufacture of trioctyl trimellitate (PVC plasticizer), powder coatings, motor heat-resistant insulation paints, etc.

•Pharmaceutical intermediates: used for synthesizing vitamin E, dyes, and various drugs.

•Synthetic resins and additives: used for preparing unsaturated polyester resins, water-soluble alkyd resins, epoxy resin curing agents, and surfactants.

•Analytical reagents and solvents: used as gas chromatography reference materials, organic synthesis solvents, etc. in the laboratory.

• Other uses: Can be isomerized into trimethylbenzene, further used in dyes, pesticides, special adhesives, etc

1,2,4-trimethylbenzene is mainly produced through the following industrial methods:

•Separation from petroleum reforming aromatics:

In catalytic reforming or naphtha cracking processes, C9-C10 aromatic fractions (containing more than 40% 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene) are generated, and then separated and purified through multi-stage distillation (such as a float valve tower) to obtain products with a purity of ≥95%.

•Laboratory or small-scale synthesis (reference method):

O Methyl can be gradually introduced through Friedel Crafts alkylation reaction, using benzene or toluene as raw materials, and reacting with chloromethane or iodomethane under AlCl3 catalysis;

Alternatively, the alkyl distribution can be adjusted through the disproportionation reaction between toluene and isopropylbenzene, and then separated to obtain the target isomer
