Used mainly in

Polymer polymerization initiator: used for free radical polymerization reactions of monomers such as vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile, styrene, and methacrylate.

Foaming agent: As a foaming agent in rubber and plastics (such as polyvinyl chloride and polyurethane), the dosage is usually 0.04% to 20%, which can produce white porous materials.

Organic synthesis intermediates: used for synthesizing pesticides, pharmaceuticals, dyes, and other fine chemicals.

Vulcanizing agent: Plays a role in certain rubber vulcanization systems.

Organizational embedding catalyst: used as a catalyst when embedding biological tissues in methacrylate.

Synthesis lines:

The typical industrial synthesis route of azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) is as follows:

1.Acetone reacts with hydrogen cyanide to produce acetone cyanohydrin

(CH3​)2​C=O+HCN→(CH3​)2​C(OH)CN

2.Dehydration of acetone cyanohydrin to produce methacrylonitrile

(CH3​)2​C(OH)CNH2​O-CH2​=C(CH3​)CN

3.Methyl acrylonitrile undergoes addition reaction with chlorine gas to produce 2,2 '- dichloromethylpropionitrile

2CH2​=C(CH3​)CN+Cl2​→ClCH2​C(CH3​)(CN)–C(CH3​)(CN)CH2​Cl

Reacts with ammonia to generate 2,2 '- azobis (2-methylpropanitrile)

This step is usually achieved through oxidative coupling or diazotization coupling pathways, and is more common in practical industry as follows:

Acetone and hydrazine condense to form dimethyldiimide

Further react with cyanide (such as cyanoacetate) for cyclization and decarboxylation, ultimately generating AIBN
