Used mainly in
Industrial intermediates: mainly used for the production of methyl ethyl ketone (MEK, also known as butanone), which is one of its most important downstream applications.
•Solvent: Widely used as an organic solvent, suitable for dissolving paints, varnishes, resins, oils, natural and synthetic resins, etc.
•Spices and essence: used to synthesize food flavors, cosmetics essence and flavor enhancers.
•Extractant: Used as an extraction solvent in chemical separation processes, especially suitable for the extraction of oils and certain organic compounds.
•Other uses:
O Manufacturing of sec butyl acetate and sec butyl ester plasticizers
Raw materials for ore dressing agents and herbicides
As a chromatographic reagent in analytical chemistry
Used for molar ratio of butyl lithium (using 1,10-phenanthrene as an indicator)

Secondary butanol can be synthesized through various methods, and the following are the main industrial or laboratory synthesis pathways:
Catalytic hydrogenation of 2-butanone
Reactant: 2-butanone (CH ∝COCH ₂ CH ∝)
Catalysts: Metal catalysts such as Ru, Pd, Ni, etc
Condition: Normal pressure or pressure, hydrogen atmosphere
Reaction equation:
CH₃COCH₂CH₃ + H₂ →CH₃CH(OH)CH₂CH₃
This method has high selectivity and is currently one of the mainstream industrial routes
Legitimate n-butene water
Convert n-butene (1-butene or 2-butene) to sec butanol by sulfuric acid method or direct hydration method
Commonly used for the utilization of C ₄ fraction in petroleum cracking gas
Hydrolysis or reduction of isopropyl methyl ether (or similar ethers)
Some patent documents mention the cracking of specific ethers under acidic or catalytic conditions to produce sec butanol
Biological or fermentation methods (less common)
In theory, it is possible to produce a mixture of butanol isomers by microbial fermentation of sugars, which can then be separated into sec butanol. However, its industrial application is limited
Note: Most modern industrial production is mainly based on 2-butanone hydrogenation method, due to its easy availability of raw materials, high purity, and minimal by-products
