Organic solvents: widely used for dissolving oils, rubbers, resins, fats, etc.
Dry cleaning agent: widely used in clothing, fur, and fabric dry cleaning.
Metal degreasing solvent: used for cleaning oil stains on metal surfaces.
Fat extractant: used for the extraction of animal and vegetable oils.
Synthetic intermediates: used for the preparation of trichloroethylene, fluorinated organic compounds, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), etc.
Analytical reagents: used as standard substances for chromatographic analysis (such as HPLC, ICP-AES).
Other uses: fire extinguishing agent, smoke screen agent, anthelmintic (historical use), paint remover, desulfurizer, etc
Synthesis lines:
The industrial synthesis of tetrachloroethylene mainly involves the following methods:
1. Direct chlorination of ethylene method
Ethylene and chlorine react in a solvent of 1,2-dichloroethane under FeCl ∝catalysis to produce 1,2-dichloroethane;
Further chlorination produces trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene;
The finished product is obtained by distillation, neutralization, and drying.
2. Oxychlorination method
Ethylene and chlorine first add to form 1,2-dichloroethane;
Then, under the action of CuCl ₂/KCl catalyst, chlorine and oxygen are subjected to oxygen chlorination at 425 ℃and 138-207 kPa;
The product is washed with water, dried, and distilled to obtain high-purity tetrachloroethylene.
3. Hydrocarbons oxidation chlorination method
Chlorination pyrolysis of mixed hydrocarbons containing methane, ethane, propylene, etc. at 50-500 ℃;
Generate a chlorinated hydrocarbon mixture and separate it into tetrachloroethylene through distillation.
4. Acetylene method (less commonly used)
Direct chlorination of acetylene can yield tetrachloroethylene, but its industrial application is limited due to the high production of by-products and high cost.
