Ammonium polyphosphate, also known as polyphosphoric acid ammonium salt, is a mixture of ammonium orthophosphate and various ammonium polyphosphates. The polyphosphates present mainly include ammonium pyrophosphate, ammonium tripolyphosphate, and ammonium tetrapolyphosphate, with longer-chain polyphosphates existing only in small amounts. It is highly soluble in water, with solubility greater than that of ammonium orthophosphate, and can chelate metal cations, keeping them in solution.

Preparation

It is produced by reacting superphosphoric acid with ammonia or by dehydrating ammonium orthophosphate. Thermal process phosphoric acid containing 76% P₂O₅ is neutralized with ammonia at 0.17–2.07 MPa and 185–215°C to yield ammonium polyphosphate containing 16%–18% nitrogen and 59%–61% P₂O₅, of which 43% of the P₂O₅ is ammonium orthophosphate, 54% is pyrophosphate, and 2%–3% is long-chain polyphosphate. When preheated wet-process phosphoric acid containing 54% P₂O₅ is used, 30% of the P₂O₅ in the resulting product is ammonium polyphosphate.

Applications

Ammonium polyphosphate is used not only as an ingredient in various fertilizers but also as a key chemical for extinguishing forest and mountain fires, as well as a fire-retardant impregnating agent for wood.

An ammonium polyphosphate solution containing 11% nitrogen and 37% P₂O₅, produced from thermal process superphosphoric acid, is used as a primary chemical for extinguishing forest and mountain fires and as a fire-retardant impregnating agent for construction wood.

A base solution of ammonium polyphosphate containing 10% nitrogen and 34% P₂O₅, made from wet-process phosphoric acid, is used as a raw material for formulating various grades of liquid compound fertilizers.
